Coconut Oil Eye Cream

This DIY version of an anti-wrinkle cream was one of the first things I made with coconut oil, years ago. My mom was complaining about how expensive tiny bottles of anti-wrinkle eye cream was, and I had recently read about the benefits of coconut oil on wrinkles and stretch marks.

Most drugstore wrinkle creams have Vitamin E in them, which made it an obvious addition. That’s it! Coconut oil & Vitamin E make an excellent anti-wrinkle cream both safe and gentle enough to use on your whole face, including around your eyes.

Melt 1/4 cup of coconut oil in a double-boiler. Once the coconut oil is completely melted, remove it from the heat. Stir in 10 drops of Vitamin E Oil. Pour into a jar and allow to cool before using. Use once or twice a day.

Whipped Organic Coconut Body Butter

Over the last few years, as natural alternatives to chemical-laden skincare products became more popular, coconut oil’s popularity has sky rocketed. Coconut oil can soothe burns, lessen stretch marks, reduce scars, moisturize dry skin and leave your hair shiny and healthy. Today, I’m going to share with you my favorite moisturizer. I’ve given this as a gift, many times, and it is a favorite.

Before we get started, these are my favorite ingredients. I’ve researched a lot of brands and tried a few I’ll never buy again. These are the brands I trust for my family, pets and followers. Also, I only use Young Living oils in my homemade skincare items. Click on the link to learn how you and your family can benefit from these amazing essential oils.

Below is the original recipe for my body butter, but you can get creative with your essential oil blends and even ingredients to create your own scents.

Combine shea butter, coconut oil and sweet almond oil in a double-boiler. Using low to medium heat melt these ingredients completely. Remove from heat and add 10-15 drops Frankincense and 10 drops of Vitamin E Oil.

Freeze mixture until it is firm to the touch. Using a mixer whip mixture until it begins to soften.

At this point you can add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch to make the body butter lighter and airier. The cornstarch also helps cut the greasy feel of the body butter. Continue to whip on high until the body butter reaches a whipped cream consistency, and is about double the starting volume. If you rub a small bit onto the back of your hand it should melt almost immediately. Place in a glass jar or container and enjoy your baby soft skin!

Young Living Essential Oils – Volume I

I’ve talked about the uses, I’ll talk about the benefits, and I’ll recommend these essential oils time and time again. Young Living Essential Oils have changed how I treat rashes, bug bites, burns, pains and strains, coughs, sinus congestion and upset stomachs. These oils are all organic, and have been researched more than any other brand of essential oils. My medicine cabinet and cleaning closet both look considerably different than they did before essential oils came into my life.

First, I’m going to tell you how to get these oils yourself. There are two options for purchasing oils, retail and wholesale. To purchase as a retail customer you can register here and fill in your account information. Retail customers do not receive a discount on their purchases and are not eligible for rewards. Wholesale members receive 24% off all items site-wide. As a wholesale member you are eligible to participate in their Essential Rewards Program which works like a cash-back program. To sign-up as a wholesale member you do have to purchase a starter kit which range from $45-$260 depending on the bundle of items you choose. One of the best ways to utilize essential oils is as an alternative cleaning option. Think about your current kitchen cleaners. What do they all smell like? Citrus! Lemon and orange both have highly antiviral and antibacterial properties. You can use lemons alone to clean, but lets take a look at this visual. interesting-facts-infographicEssential oils are very concentrated oils from the plant they are extracted from. A couple drops of lemon with vinegar works as a kitchen cleaner and sanitizer. But my FAVORITE oil and cleaner is Thieves. Thieves essential oil is a blend of Rosemary, Cinnamon, Lemon, Cloves and Eucalyptus. The name? The herbs in Thieves were used during the bubonic plague by thieves to avoid catching the plague whilst robbing victims houses. Thieves is one of the largest product lines offered by Young Living and includes: cleaner, laundry detergent, bar soap, hand soap, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, veggie wash and the one and only essential oil itself. I keep the cleaner mixed up in a spray bottle at all times. We use the cleaner in our steam mop for an added cleaning boost, and I diffuse the oil to kill bacteria in the air.

I’ve barely hit the tip of the iceberg when it comes to essential oils. I’ll share more later and of course, you will continue to hear about how to use these oils in my other posts. I hope you consider the benefits of natural cleaning and natural healing. Comment with questions or personal experiences, I’d love to hear your stories!

Homemade Lip Balm

I always want a lip balm handy, but I can’t pronounce over half the ingredients. Seriously, what is octyldodecanol?

Today, I’m going to share with you how to make lip balm with only four natural ingredients.

What you need:

  • White Beeswax Pellets (Make sure to use pellets as solid forms of beeswax will take too long to melt.)
  • Virgin Coconut Oil* (I recommend Trader Joe’s brand)
  • Unrefined Shea Butter
  • Optional: Essential Oil of your Choice                                                                                                            (I only use and recommend Young Living, enroll here.)

Combine in a double boiler:

  • 1 Tablespoon Beeswax Pellets
  • 1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon Shea Butter
  • 10 drops Essential Oil** – Add just before pouring

Heat these ingredients on low-medium until they are all melted and combined. Add your Essential Oil and stir in just before you remove from the heat as heat exposure can alter essential oils. Pour your lip balm into small containers (like these) and leave at room temperature until solidified.

Amazon sells all sorts of cute lip balm containers if you are looking to give them as a gift.

*When using coconut oil to make your own beauty products, make sure to melt it in a double boiler. Microwaving coconut oil can breakdown nutrients in the oil. Coconut oil also has a very low burning point, and overheating can cause it to catch fire.

**Peppermint, lavender, grapefruit and tangerine make great flavors for lip balm.

Dollar Shave Club – Starting at $1/month*

Dollar Shave Club offers a wide variety of boxes to fit your needs. The base boxes come with a handle and pack of 4 blades your first month and 4 blades each following month. Expect to find samples of shaving and hair care products on a fairly regular basis. After trying all of their razors, I personally recommend the 4x Plan which costs $6/month. They recommend replacing your blade every week, but my husband and I both find these blades to last much longer. We often skip months in between blade shipments if we don’t need more which stretches your cash even further. Plus! These razors outshine every drugstore razor I’ve tried. See their other options below.

*The $1/month plan incurs a shipping fee of $2/month for a total of $3/month.

ipsy – $10/month

5 handpicked beauty products each month for only $10/month. When you sign-up they have you fill out an in depth Beauty Quiz. This gives them information on your skin tone, skin type, hair color, hair type, beauty skills and preferences, and favorite products. As with all of the subscription boxes I recommend, shipping is free! ipsy boxes are usually worth at least $40 and even come with full-sized products from time to time. This is a great way to try out beauty products if you don’t have to have elite brands since ipsy provides a wide range of products.

Birchbox – $10/month

Birchbox is a monthly beauty box subscription specializing in hide-end beauty products. After your first box, you can choose one sample-size item per month and they will pick four more samples to fit your profile. Boxes average between $30-$50 in value, and give you access to the beauty industry’s top new products. Shipping is free but tax varies based on your state. The best part? If you like the products you can often find great deals to buy them on their website!
